Metal Mining Environmental Effects Monitoring

Client: Teck Metals Ltd., Polaris Mine

Azimuth designed and implemented an environmental effects monitoring (EEM) program for the Polaris Mine in Nunavut, to ensure compliance with Metal Mining Effluent Regulations. The project was carried out in consultation with the regional Technical Advisory Panel and also harmonized with specific requirements by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Study components included effluent and water quality (chemistry and toxicity) and biological monitoring (benthos and fish). The Polaris EEM program recognized the unique features of the mine’s discharge (i.e., brackish and only discharging during summer months) as well as the logistical challenges involved with field studies in this remote high Arctic environment.
